Historical and Background Information
The
Lawrence T. Gay Memorial School at Woodstock, Spooners Hill, St. Michael was
constructed due to overcrowding at the nearby Grace Hill Primary School. The
area on which the school plant is situated was previously owned by the late Doctor
Carlyle Clarke and was purchased by the Government of Barbados. The school was
named after a well-known and respected educator, the late Lawrence Theodor Gay
on Wednesday,12th May 1982.
There are four (4) Blocks which constitute this school site.
These include:
Block
A – Administration block (The former residence of Dr. Clarke)
Block
B - Grace Hill Block
Block
C – Matilda Deane
Block
D – Clarke Block (named after Dr. Clarke)
This
co-educational institution was built to accommodate 840 students and originally
opened in January 1982 to 517 students under the leadership of Mrs Cora Waldron.
Their small male roll improved tremendously in September 1982 after the
amalgamation of Buxton Boys and Roebuck Boys in September 1982. It has been since
managed by several other principals. These include Ms. Jacqueline Holder, Mr.
Chester Blades, Mr. Lionel Eastmond, Ms. Jennifer Hinds, Ms Beverly Parris and Ms.
Jacinta Alexander.
The present principal is Mr. Brent Blackett and the school now has a roll of approximately 377 students and 32 teachers, two of whom are senior teachers. This roll may be attributed to the ongoing environmental issues which have been plaguing the school for several years.
